Which leads us rather nicely into the Randy Couture and James Toney fight, which was just what everyone expected, Randy shot from a mile away and took Toney down laying a beating on him and then submitting him rather quickly. I’m sure Toney got a decent pay day from this one and probably helped to convince any other boxers looking to transition that they will probably need to spend longer than 9 months preparing.

Grey Maynard and Kenny Florian went the distance in their contender bout, with Maynard doing what he does best, controlling and shutting down fighters. It’s never exciting watching Grey fight, he really doesn’t have any tools other than being able to control other fighters very easily, his striking is sub par, his ju jitsu is rarely used for fear of losing that control and his wrestling is the reason that the term lay n pray is around. While he definitely won the fight it really isn’t pretty to watch, when Maynard gets his title shot expect that card to be stacked to the rafters with other good fights or at least another title fight, because while Maynard is excellent at what he does, he always takes the path with least risk involved and that is why he will/may be a champion one day but will never be a fan favourite or someone who sells PPV’s.

Demian Maia just looks better every fight and while he was unable to finish Mario Miranda, who at 6 foot 4 and a beast of a man, you would think would be able to out muscle or out strike Maia, but it just wasn’t the case. Maia who I never liked to watch fight initially, I now find myself rooting for, his striking has improved he looks confident and more dynamic, and the way he handled such a big opponent who is himself a black belt in Brazilian ju jitsu was pretty impressive, throw in a few looping Fedor style punches that then transition to a clinch and Maia is now one of my fave fighters.

Overall UFC 118 was a pretty good card, after a disappointing opening fight, Joe Lauzon managed to get the crowd worked his impressive finish of Gabe Ruediger who was hit with some of the most devastating underarm punches I’ve ever seen which along with the rest of the good fights on the card made UFC 118 a resounding winner.

Also on the show this week is Roy Nelson, Ryan Couture and Dominick Cruz talking about their last fight and up coming fights respectively.

With UFC 115 airing later this evening, the main focus goes to that with the crew giving their picks on some of the big fights of the night including the showdown between heavyweight strikers Mirko Cro Cop and Pat Barry, and the main event with Rich Franklin filling in for the injured Tito Ortiz against UFC Legend Chuck Liddell.

First up we have a great fight with new interim heavyweight UFC champ Shane Carwin taking on Frank Mir and showing that he will be a real test for Brock Lesnar. Watching this fight from a totally different experience gives you a totally different view of the whole fight, especially with the high angle which stops your view being obscured by the cage.

The next video we have is Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski, and i think we all remember how this went, but again like the previous video it’s totally different watching the fight from a different viewpoint without the additional cameras. You might want to turn the sound down a little on this one it’s not the best quality!

In the main fight of the evening we saw Alistair Overeem make short work of Brett Rogers who was unable to get any shots off against the much more seasoned K1 level striker who was able to just toss Rogers around the cage and then finish with some very impressive ground and pound that despite the no elbows rule in Strikeforce was able to easily finish the fight.

Andrei Arlovski made his return to MMA with a 3 round war against Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva who was just able to clinch a decision victory over the unlucky of late Arlovski. The fight was close and it’s a good win for Silva who is a durable fighter that’s hard to put away, Arlovski took some big shots and both guys came out of the fight without any real shame.

Brazilian middleweight stand out Ronaldo Souza was able to win a unanimous decision over Joey Villasenor on the night in a close fought battle that was really all about Souza’s take downs which dominated the first two rounds. The real question is, is Souza next in line for a middleweight shot?

Roger Gracie took a submission win over an ageing Kevin Randleman and with his jab and skills on the ground, Gracie managed to look good if a little plodding in the cage. The other main card fight of the night saw Rafael Cavalcante KO Antwain Britt at the end of round 1.

Molly Qerim continues her review of this seasons TUF with the last preliminary fight airing this week, and the panel also look forward to Strikeforce Heavy Artillery this weekend which will see Brett Roger take on reigning champ Alistair Overeem in a battle for the belt.

Also fighting on the UFC 113 card are Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley for a shot at GSP and a place on the Ultimate Fighter, which if Koscheck and Daley needed any more motivation there it is.

Kimbo Slice is also back in the Octagon taking on fellow Tuf’er Matt Mitrione, which should be an exciting fight, but one that is going to be hard to call.

Riding high of his TUF popularity we also see Kimbo Slice return to the Octagon agains fellow TUF contestant Matt Mitrione who is also a stand up fighter. This fight will most likely see a Mitrione who is very keen to wrestle and will be looking to take Kimbo down. While im looking forward to watching this fight neither of these guys are going to be contending for a belt anytime soon, so sit back and enjoy the fight for what it is.

With UFC 113 being held in Montreal the Canadian fighers on this card are plentiful with two of them on the main card. Sam Stout is taking on Jeremy Stevens in a fight which should go the distance, Sam Stout rarely gets KO’d and neither does Stevens. Patrick Cote is also making his return to the Octagon with a bout against Alan Belcher, which should provide a really interesting stand up war and will surely see Cote’s knee tested, with Belchers aggressive Muay Thai style.
