The MMA Live crew also talk about the recent comments Frank Mir made about Brock Lesnar and also have Chael Sonnen in the studio to have a chat.

Throw in Ben Saunders coming off his impressive stoppage of Marcus Davis, John Fitch taking on Thiago Alves for a second time and Jim Miller squaring off against Mark Bocek and you have a pretty entertaining card for UFC 111.

Personally i cant wait to see the two headline fights, St-Pierre is near unstoppable but if previous efforts are anything to go by the pre fight hype will be worked to the maximum by Dan Hardy who always has a way to get into his opponents head.

Frank Mir Vs Shane Carwin should also be a great fight, and while Cain Velasquez is waiting in the wings, either of these guys has the power to win via KO and earn a shot at returning champ Brock Lesnar.  With Mir recent fight against Kongo we saw knock down power and dangerous submissions, but will Carwin continue his run of first round KO’s and light Mir up, this is definitely going to be one fight you won’t want to blink during.

Wanderlie Silva and Michael Bisping both stepped in the ring with a bit of a grudge against their opponent and it definitely showed in the fight, which i never expected to go the distance but round one was fairly calm, Bisping looked more confident in his stance and got a couple of takedowns and managed to land some good strikes when Silva got back to his feet.  Silva also got a couple of good punches and also took a couple round one definitely in the favour of Bisping, inspite of a flurry from Silva at the end.  Round two was more tense with Bisping being put on his back foot by Silva, after that a takedown for Silva and some exchanges saw round two much more even and probably going in Silvas favour especially after a close guillotine that probably would have ended the fight except for the round ending.  Round three was more of the same and probably too close to call, it really could have gone either way but silva got a knockdown at the end of round 3, giving Silva the win and a unanimous decision.

Joe Stevenson took on George Sotiopoulous and this fight promised fireworks for one nature or another and didn’t fail to deliver the fight quickly went to the ground where George was on top but was just tied up by Stevenson from the bottom until some back and forth action left George on top and winning the round with better technique and some impressive strength for his build.  Round two saw Stevenson getting outboxed and tagged in almost every exchange before he took it down for a more even matched ground game in round two, but still another win for Sotiopoulous.  Round three was more of the same and overall a good win for the Australian Sotiopoulous who was just better in every area on the night.

Ryan Bader took a step up in competition against UFC veteran Keith Jardine, who was dominated in round one and then came back in round two with some great sprawls and punches that had Bader on the backfoot.  Round three saw Bader clip Jardine with a hook and then follow up with a flying knee and an uppercut that put Jardine out for a second and the fight was stopped.  Jardine put up a great fight and the final punch from Bader was a beast i don’t think anyone would be standing after being clipped by that, a good win for Bader who still doesnt have classy striking but it’s very effective.

Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ made his last possible fight in the Octagon, after getting a beatdown at the hands of Junior Dos Santos in his last fight, it looked as though Mirko was hanging up the gloves for good, but we saw him return tonight taking on late replacement Anthony Perosh for an injured Ben Rothwell, and put up a valiant effort against the superior striker in Cro Cop who was able to land some punches in round 1 and open up a cut in round two that saw the fight stopped at the end of that round via TKO.  A good win for Cro Cop who showed some great sprawls and takedown defense and should ensure that we see him back in the cage once again.

So overall the UFC have brought out some big guns for their first trip to Australia, a mix of old and new fighters but all guys who usually put on good fights. With the time difference in Australia the event will actually be live there at 2:00 on Sunday meaning the usual airing time will be in the evening on Saturday for the American fans.

Tickets actually sold out in less than an hour for this event, so there is obviously a market for MMA in Australia and the UFC have even put a couple of Australians on the card with the return of Elvis Sinosic taking on another Australian Chris Haseman.

First up is of course UFC 110 which is set to go down in Australia on the 20th February, and features a pretty stacked card with Nogueira Vs Velasquez as the main event.  Also bringing the action on the card is the return of Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ facing off against Ben Rothwell, and Wanderlei Silva taking on Michael Bisping. All in all UFC 110 looks like a great card with a stacked main card and some interesting undercard fights too.  Watch out also for Keith Jardine’s return to the Octagon against Ryan Bader, and Joe Stevenson taking on the very hard to type and even harder to pronounce George Sotiropoulos.

Next is the first UFC event to air live on Versus UFC Vera Vs Jones, with another stacked card full of popular strikers, which seems to be the way they are going for this card to make the most of a potential new audience, there wont be any lay and pray going on in this card!  On the main event is of course Brandon Vera Vs. Jon Jones, which should be a real test for Jones who i have as the favourite, but don’t be surprised to see Vera’s experience and striking background help him out here, he’s only lost once due to strikes in his career but Jon Jones is a future prodigy in the making.

Also on this card is Junior Dos Santos taking on Gabe Gonzaga, and Cheik Kongo Vs. Paul Buentello again more striking to bring in some more casual fans to the sport on March the 21st, sounds like a good plan to me.

At UFC 111 we have two title fights on the line on March 27th with St-Pierre Vs. Hardy main eventing and we also have the Heavyweight interim title fight between Frank Mir and Shane Carwin.  This is the card I’m most looking forward too i really can’t wait to see how the Mir and Lesnar fight goes down, i think the Pierre Hardy fight will be a little more one sided.  Also on UFC 111 we have the rematch between Alves and Fitch and Jim Miller taking on Mark Bocek.
