MMA Weekend Recap – WEC and UFC Fight Night

This weekend and Monday night saw two Zuffa MMA events back to back with WEC 46 and UFC Fight Night 20. WEC saw the return of Uriah Faber who took a submission of the night win over Raphael Assuncao, who got dropped a couple of times before Faber sunk in a rear naked choke that put the former 145lb champ in line for a match against the current champion Jose Aldo.

Jamie Varner made his return also to defend his Lightweight belt against Ben Henderson’s Interim Lightweight belt in a fight which saw Henderson finish with a wicked guillotine that Varner didn’t want any part off, and sets up the rematch between Henderson and Donald Cerrone which was almost too close to call the first time around.

Also making his return was Mike Thomas Brown who made quick work of Anthony Morrison winning early in round one by rear naked choke.

Overall the WEC completely delivered on a night of fights with blistering pace and lots of action and finishes, you have to wonder how far that PPV show is off, and business wise there wouldn’t be a better match to spark that off for them, than with the Faber vs Aldo fight.

The UFC also had their UFC Fight Night 20 on Monday night headlined by almost lightweight contender Grey Maynard take on the tough and very tricky Nick Diaz in the main event. The fight went the distance and had some wild scoring on the cards with Maynard getting and deserving the win, taking rounds 1 and 2 in my eyes over a game Diaz.

Tom Lawler made his second fight at Middleweight and looked amazing giving Aaron Simpson a schooling int he stand up rocking him too many times to mention, and i’m amazed he kept upright at all. Round two and three were more even with Aaron walking away with a win over Tom Lawler who obviously didn’t get the 10 8 first round that he should have.

Amir Saddollah returned to the Octagon against Brad Blackburn and won a solid win with some amazing striking but just couldn’t finish the fight. Efran Escudero ran into trouble against Evan Dunham losing to a very dangerous looking armbar that saw Efran tapping out in the third.

Overall a decent Fight Night for the UFC but WEC was definitely the winner again this weekend putting on a great card that really delivered.
