Strikeforce Evolution and WEC 45 Recap

This weekend we have two MMA events going head to head which of course were Strikeforce Evolution and WEC 45 which gave us a minor headache in that we had to choose which we were going to watch. Personally i watched the Strikeforce Evolution card and while i was a little bit worried i might have chose the wrong event to watch those thoughts were quickly quashed though with all four main cards fights really delivering the goods in a night of action thats saw a couple of real upsets.

On the other side WEC which i caught up with this morning also had some great fights including Donald Cerrone against Ed Ratcliff, with Cerrone bouncing back from his last decision loss to sink in a choke in round three putting him back on the winning road. Chris Horodecki also made his WEC debut last night against the very tough striker Anthony Njokuani who was just too much for Horodecki in size and power taking Horodecki down in round one, then scoring a very bizarre head kick knockdown while Horodecki was backing away to regroup. Both main fights did however go the way many pundits called them which really made the difference between this card and the Strikeforce match ups.

In the main event of Strikeforce Evolution we saw Cung Le return to the cage taking on the always tough Scott Smith in a battle which saw Cung Le land some flashy and effective kicks that saw Smith dropped numerous times while bouncing off the cage wall on the way down. In round 3 however Smith got his chance for retribution and caught Cung with a punch that put him off balance after that a flurry put Cung on his back and demolishing his nose in the process, Smith wins a major upset here and in true fashion you really can never count out Scott Smith.

In the co main event we saw the unification of the Strikeforce Lightweight titles with Champ Josh Thompson taking on interim champ Gilbert Melendez in a battle which saw Melendez really get the better of the exchanges putting Thompson down numerous times over the five rounds and getting a unanimous decision that saw the underdog winning again.

In a great main cards we also so King Mo Lawal get an impressive victory at heavyweight over Mike Whitehead and Ronaldo Jacare Souze put Matt Linland down and sunk in an arm triangle that won him the bout. If Strikeforce keep putting on cards like this they will definitely be growing their fan base.
