After the successful weekend showing for Strikeforce with their first CBS event in the bag and Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers putting on a great main event, it’s time to take a look at some of the post fight press interviews from the card.

First up we have the post fight interview from Brett Rogers and Fedor, where Rogers talks about the fight and some of the mistakes he makes, one interesting thing is due to cage announcer talking to Fedor about a potential rematch, Rogers seems very keen on that already, and while it’s something we should definitely see down the line, i think there are more interesting fights for Strikeforce to fit into their 3 fight one year contract with The Emperor.

Next we have an interview with Scott Coker talking to MMA Fanhouse Reporter Ariel Helwani where they talk about the card how it went and Coker reaction to the night. What is really interesting is where Coker talks about sitting cageside and wanting to cheer and get involved in the atmosphere but then realizing that maybe it’s not his position too.

With Strikeforce’s first CBS outing now over its time for us to bring you the results from the Strikeforce – Fedor Vs Rogers. It was a night of great MMA action that broke new ground in so many ways, and Strikeforce just continue to impress with their line up of MMA cards which are stacked top to bottom with great fights, and with their feeder show the Strikeforce Challenger series getting new names and up an comers out there too the future looks good for the San Jose based outfit.

Fedors Vs Rogers lived up to expectation with Rogers showing that punching power by landing one straight on Fedor busting his nose up and forcing the Russian to act fast right from the start of the fight. By the end of round one, Fedor had tossed Rogers like a rag doll hit him with flurries and also been mounted himself in a action packed round. In round two we saw Fedor come in looking for the finish and while Rogers showed improved wrestling and grappling skills, it would be a sweet right hand punch from Fedor that would land directly on Rogers chin putting him down hard with Fedor jumping in to finish the fight. Fedor walks away with the victory but Rogers showed some skills and hasn’t really lost any value in this fight.

For the Strikeforce middleweight title fight, Jake Shield squared off against Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller in a battle which saw Shields win a decision victory with a very dull smothering tactic and a serious lack of any quality ground and pound punches. There were submission attempts a plenty from both sides, but it was only Miller who ever got close to finishing the fight when he had a sunk in rear naked choke on Shields at the end of round three, Shields would have had to tap but was saved by the bell by a matter of seconds.

Mousasi and Sokoudjou only went two round with Mousasi proving too much with his grappling, striking and all round calmness getting him a TKO victory early in the second round, and just cementing the fact that Mousasi is the real deal at 205lbs.

In the Heavyweight division the first fight of the evening saw Antonio Silva and Fabricio Verdum go head to head in a clash of the Brazilians. A few things were shocking in this fight, firstly Verdum throwing kicks that looked good, and the fight went the decision after an early flurry in round one looked like it might have been stopped in Silva’s favour. In the end the decision went to Verdum, in a very close fought battle.

Overall Strikeforce – Fedor Vs Rogers was a great card, one of the best in recent times and a resounding success for Strikeforce! Hopefully this will be the first of many, and if the ratings are good, then Strikeforce should be able to move forward and bring in more up and coming talent and put on more events that hopefully match up to the quality we saw last night.

Main Card

Fedor Emelianenko Vs Brett Rogers – Fedor Emelianenko wins by second round TKO
Jake Shields Vs Jason Miller – Jake Shields wins by unanimous decision
Gegard Mousasi Vs Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou – Gegard Mousasi wins by second round TKO
Fabricio Werdum Vs Antonio Silva – Fabricio Verdum wins by unanimous decision

Preliminary Card

Marloes Coenen Vs Roxanne Modafferi – Marloes Coenen wins by first round submission (armbar)
Jeff Curran Vs Dustin Neace – Jeff Curran wins by first round submission (injury)
John Kolosci Vs Shamar Bailey – Shamar Bailey wins by unanimous decision
Louis Taylor Vs Nate Moore – Nate Moore wins by second round submission (strikes)
Christian Uflacker Vs Jonatas Novaes – Christian Uflacker wins by unanimous decision

With only a few days till Fedor steps in his first cage for his fight with up and comer Brett Rogers, CBS have started ramping up the media hype trying to introduce the average MMA fan who might only know UFC to the MMA legend that is Fedor Emelianenko.

CBS have put together a pretty interesting half hour show building the hype and background on both fighters and we get to see in depth the training schedules and game plan formulation that both teams have. There is a massive difference in the way that Fedor and Rogers seem to be training for this fight but you can’t really argue with Fedor’s record and while Rogers is still unbeaten he is a massive underdog on all the betting lines for this event.

Who will Fedor Emelianenko actually fight next for Strikeforce? That is the question that everyone wants answered Fedor is the man that could make Strikeforce a favourite with hardcore MMA, but do Strikeforce really have enough quality opponents for Fedor to fight?

Well Fedor has signed a 1 year, 3 fight deal with Strikeforce, that means that we can expect to see Fedor fight once this year and most likely twice next year, with the possiblity of injuries and lay off time affecting them, Strikeforce will no doubt be itching to get Fedor in the cage as soon as possible. So who is he actually going to fight, well Strikeforce doesn’t have many choices at the moment, but were going to take a look at all the potentials and see where we end up.

Fabricio Verdum
Verdum just made his debut for Strikeforce on the Carano Vs Cyborg card and handed Mike Kyle a loss via first round submission. Verdum could be a good first fight for Fedor, he’s well known, tall and skilled fighter and has already got a win over Fedor’s brother Aleksander back in Pride. Fedor should easily win this fight though and i think hardcore fans will be a little disapointed if they throw Fedor in with Verdum to start off with.

Alistair Overeem
Overeem is a big dangerous heavyweight with 29 wins on his MMA record, 11 by KO, 17 by Submission and is currently the Strikeforce heavyweight belt holder after beating Paul Buentello back in 2007. Overeem was supposed to make his first defense against Verdum on the Carano card, but injured his hand in an alleged nightclub brawl and wasn’t able to fight. This would be the most exciting match here i think, Overeem is big strong and talented and could easily give Fedor some problems, but do Strikeforce want to have this match right of the bat or put Fedor into a warm up match first.

Brett Rogers
Rogers is a massive heavyweight coming in at the 265lbs limit and standing 6ft 5″ tall, he is a power puncher and is on a 10 fight win streak, with 9 fights ending by KO. Only two of his fights have gone out of the first round and although the competion he has faced up until his last fight with Arlovski were suspect in the most part, the win over Andrei in just 22 seconds shows that Rogers has dangerous hands. This is my mind is the second most worthy fight but it poses some problems, Rogers could have a legitimate punchers chance against Fedor and do Strikeforce want to risk their most valuable asset getting beaten by Brett Rogers on his first Strikeforce bout, i think not so don’t expect to see this match up soon.

So from the 3 available opponents here is how i see the Fedor schedule lining up, first up i think we will see Verdum Vs Fedor as his first fight, presuming Fedor wins we will see Overeem match up with him for the title, then and only possibly then i think we might see the Rogers fight. Scott Coker actually quoted that Rogers or Verdum are likely to fight Fedor in November so it seems like Overeem is definately out for the time being.

Of course there are other fighters for Strikeforce to choose from or they could bring someone else in, it’s going to be interesting though to wait and see how this pans out.

EA Sports are bringing out their own MMA Game which will no doubt be going head to head against THQ’s already released UFC Undisputed game which has received above average reviews and reception all around. The real question is who is actually going to be starring in the upcoming EA MMA Game.

Well EA Sports have just signed up Randy Couture who surprisingly is a UFC fighter, but it appears that Dana White stated that Randy Couture would be the only UFC fighter to star in this game and that was only due to a pre-existing contractual agreement between Randy and the UFC. Fedor Emelianenko is the other big name that EA have signed up, but they also have a few other confirmed fighters you probably know, Renato ‘Babalou’ Sobral, Gegard Mousasi and Jay Heiron.

There are also a lot of names being thrown about that haven’t yet been confirmed but these include Tim Sylvia, Benji Radach, Frank Shamrock, Frank Trigg, Jake Shields, Bobby Lashley, Nick Diaz and Muhammed Lawal.

So from the list it sounds as though EA could build a decent roster of fighters for their game, although in no way does it match the roster that the UFC game clocked up. EA do have a lot more sports game history than THQ so it’s definitely possible that this game could topple UFC Undisputed in the gameplay stakes.

The game should be due out sometime in 2010 no solid release date yet, In the meantime if you want to learn some more about EA Sports MMA you can check out the official site here, or take a look at the Fox Fight Game show where Mike Straka chats to the president of EA about the game here.
