If you didn’t get to catch UFC 102 last night or are still in shock at some of the results and need to read them again, then we have some breakdowns on the fights last night and of course all the results from the fights in the Octagon from UFC 102, which proved to be a main card with a lot of quick knockouts.
Randy Couture and Antonio Nogueira stepped into the heavyweight battle with some fast punching and grappling starting off the round. The first thing to note was that Nogueira looked light on his feet and a far cry from the way he looked in the Frank Mir fight, both fighters landed some clean punches and they tussled it out in the grapples but 2 minutes into he first round Big Nog caught Randy with some solid punches on the chin and got Couture in a deep choke that Couture just refused to tap from. The first round continued at a wicked pace and these two put on the best fight of the night in just the first round proving to be a worthy main event.
When round two started it was more of the same then they went to the ground with Randy in Nogueira’s guard wisely keeping Nog’s hips off the mat to nullify any ju jistu submission attempts. Nog managed to somehow flip Couture over into a full mount but was unable to capitalize before switching to half guard and trying to lock in another choke, before Randy amazing pulled out of the ground and got back to his feet. Eventually Nog showed some dominance and his submission attempts and solid striking helped him to pull of a unanimous decision victory against a game Randy Couture.
Thiago Silva and Keith Jardine squared off at UFC 102 and it was due to be over quickly with Silva stalking and Jardine throwing back with some awkward angles. Silva then caught Jardine with a left hook and put him out with a couple of punches on the ground in impressive fashion. With Silva only having one loss to the current champion Lyoto Machida, you now have to still class Silva as one of the possible elite of the 205lb division, even Rampage couldn’t finish Jardine and Silva made it look like a walk in a park, who’s going to be next for this knock out artist is an interesting discussion.
Demian Maia got a chance to show off his striking with one nice head kick in his battle with Nate Marquart in the first round, until Marquart landing right on the button with a solid punch as Maia was walking in, putting him right on his back and out of the fight. This was a quicker finish than i think anyone was expecting, even thought he general consensus was that Marquart was going to overpower Maia.
Brandon Vera and Krzysztof Soszynski went the distance in what was a closer fight than i ever thought it would be, Vera was landing the cleaner more accurate strikes from distance but still lacked the finishing skills against a very strong opponent on Krzysztof who toughed it out always game but never quite being able to land anything solid on the elusive Vera.
Other notable points on the UFC 102 were that Todd Duffee managed to secure a fast knock out of Tim Hague in just a few 7 seconds of the first round setting a new UFC record and Jake Rosholt managed to submit a tough Chris Leben early into round three.
