UFC 109 Relentless went down with a bang tonight at the Mandaley Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and with a nice mix of old and new stars it had something for new and old MMA fans alike. With a headliner featuring two hall of famers, both serious competitors but only one able to walk away victorious and you knew it was going to be an interesting main card.
Randy Couture and Mark Coleman faced off, with Randy taking control early and dominating in typical Couture fashion. Round two saw more of the same with clinch and then a takedown setting up a nice rear naked choke that saw Randy getting another win int he octagon.

Mike Swick and Paulo Thiago stepped in the cage and i was rooting for Thiago in this one who is i think a much more legitimate contendor for the title with a better set of skills, but you can’t really count Mike Swick out. Round one was a bit of a stalemate on the feet and ended with a takedown for Swick. Round two was more action packed with Thiago landing a wild counter left hook and finished with a darth choke taking a convincing win, and dare i say it winning in a much more convincing way than Dan Hardy did.
Jim Miller and Damian Maia were up next and Maia slightly edged the first round with a mix of takedown attempts and strikes with Miller constantly on the backfoot and Maia looking much more confident in his stand up. Round two and three were similar with Maia getting a few rounds of action in and taking a unanimous decision win.
The first fight of the night was Matt Serra and Frank Trigg, with Serra making light work of Trigg with a range of strikes to the body and head, landing a big overhand right that had Trigg on wobbly legs and then finished it with a few punches to the chin followed by a good ref stoppage.
Nate Marquart and Chael Sonnen stepped in the Octagon with the promise of a number one contender spot and the next shot at the title, and round one saw Chael Sonnen come out fast controlling Nate on the ground which continued for the whole of round one. Round two started very similar with Sonnen getting an early takedown, but Nate landing a vicious elbow from his back that cut Sonnen up, round two ended with a lot of a blood and another round for Sonnen. Round three saw Nate land a wicked Guillotine submission that Sonnen managed to escape from but it was just too little too late with Sonnen getting a well earned unanimous decision.
All in all one of the better UFC cards for a while, with lots of nice TKO’s and submissions and some contender changing wins, roll on UFC 110.
